I see now. If you go through the "browse" tab, we add a binary reference for you, and there is no auto-update.
If the library project exists in the same solution, its name is automatically displayed in the "project" tab of "add reference" dialog. To narrow down the issue, can you verify it by creating a new web and add a new class library into the same solution?
BTW, do you use web express version? We don't support project reference in express version.

I added the dll's through the browse tab, not the projects tab.

There are no entries in my "Projects" tab, and there doesn't appear to be a way in the dialog to add projects to this tab. How do I get my project to show up?

BTW, did you create the project reference between the web project and the class project? If not, the dlls in web's "Bin" folder won't be updated automatically. This is by design.
To create a project reference, you can right click the web project's node in the solution explorer window, and click the context menu of "Add Reference", and in the dialog click "Projects" tab,and select the library project, and click OK. After that, the dlls built out from the library project are copied to web's "Bin" folder automatically everytime you build the library project or run the web. If the two projects use same language, we keep the live intellisense even you don't build out the library project.

Our temp solution for this is not to add the dlls to the source control. So we have the little yellow plus signs next to the dlls. Not ideal.

Excluding would be great.

In Beta1 VS is there any way to NOT have the bin folder included in SourceSafe?

We have our project in SourceSafe and right now don't have any way to "exclude from project" like you used to be able to do in VS2003. This makes it a huge pain because of multiple developers writing over each other's copies.

Any ideas?

I am using the VS.Net Beta 1 (beta1.040607-1600), and the dlls are still not being copied. Here is what I am doing:

1) In the library project, the build output directory is in the \Bin folder of the project.

2) When I add the dlls to the Web project, I do this: Add Reference, then browse to the \Bin folder of the library project.

3) I make a small change to the api in the library project and rebuild.

4) I then run OR build the Web project, the new dll's are *not* picked up. I see the old dlls in the web project's \bin directory, and the web project compiles based on the old library's api.

Let me know if you'd like to see a solution file, or please advise if there's a setting I'm missing.

If you are using Beta1 VS build, the fix for the original issue is in. Once you create the project reference between a web project and a library project, when you build the library project or run the web, project system automatically copies all the latest binaries from class library's "Bin" directory to web's "Bin" directory to make sure runtime always get the latest assemblies.

I am running Beta1 and in my Web project, my referenced dll's in the bin directory are still being copied, not referring to the original folder.

This is a total pain because we are building infrastructure pieces and wish to extract this from our web project. Every time we make a change to the infra piece, we will then have o remove/add the reference in the web project.

What's the status on this and perhaps there is a setting I need to adjust?

Fredrik is correct. This issue has been addressed.
As mentioned in readme in MSDN, the "Add reference" button doesn't work consistently. In many situation clicking it doesn't have response. You can workaround this by switching to \bin assembly reference. Hope this helps

The only way you can do it, is to add it to the \bin folder. Beta 1 will be out soon and it will probably been fixed in beta 1.

There doesn't seem to be a project file for the web project so I have no file to edit. That is what I find odd. Where are these setting kept in Whidbey?

At the moment I am having to manually copy the dll into the web project's bin directory for it to use the correct version. This is not a good solution. I am going to make a post build step to do it.

All the other projects have a Referenced folder in the solution explorer. The web project doesn't.

Can you hack out the XML for a project file or can VS just physically not reference the other project?
