Is the Wrox book that builds The Beer House worth reading?

I currently have a pretty good foundation of sql server, asp.net and C#. I've done a lot of reading, worked through some tutorials and worked with a lot of the controls. I just recently started working with the object data source and trying to get an app to work with 4 logical layers which has been challenging.

I'm considering reading and working through the Wrox Problem-Design-Solution book by Marco Bellinaso that builds The Beer House site. It seems to do a good job of using a more real world architecture and explaining a lot of stuff along the way. I think it would help take my knowledge and skills to the next level.

Would anyone recommend this book and/or tell me their opinion of it? It will take a while for me to work through it. I'm hoping it would be worth the time and effort, and that it will improve my knowledge and skills.

I'm debating between reading the new and the old Beer House books. Is there anyone out there that has read both of them? If so, can you please share some insight on your experience with them. There seem to be a lot of issues with the new one, way more than the old one. If I do the new one then I would be doing it in C# even though it is written in vb.

Does anyone have any opinions?

OK non of these work. I was planning on trying to use this for a forum I wanted to build but these are not even close to working. I have seen several error on each of the downloads.

Is there a version that even works or is this just for training? There is know way I can use this for a client.

Will I have issues running the original Beer House project in VS 2008?

I downloaded the source for the original Beer House project that targets ASP.net 2.0. In the readme.txt file it says that it was built with VS2005. I'm running VS 2008 Pro. I've tried converting some small projects that were built with VWD 2005 to VS 2008 and had some issues. I suspect the same type of thing will happen when I run/install this project.

I would like to know what to expect. Has anyone run this with VS 2008? Did you have any issues with this?

I have the Starterkit 3.5 working fine on my computer but when I upload to my server I get the following error:

Beerhouse - Why can't i see the Product pages 404 Errors

To anyone who has used the Beerhouse website sample. Can i please get some help with the website frontend.

I can browse the website locally just fine, but cannot get my page redirects for Product details, Article details to show in a browser. I am constantly getting 404 errors with the URL re-write which i can see is from the sitemap SQL table in the database.

I have installed URL Re-Write 1.1 along with all 3.5 components. Is there something i am not editing correctly or haven't installed for the URL's to work?

I have:

- downloaded and installed SQL Server 2008 Express database to my Vista Ultimate laptop

- Extracted the ASP.NET 3.5 AJAX version files to my directory and opened permissions

- Edited app.config and web.config files under the TBHBLL & BeerHouse35 folders

Please help...

I always get this error : "Server Error in '/' Application. Runtime error" when i want to launch my site, its online, and when i want to debug it localy it works fine, but only when i put it online I get that error...

Deleting a forum not working here

Can anyone please solve my problem. When i try to attach the database the following error comes

"The database 'TheBeerHouseVB' cannot be opened because it is version 655. This server supports version 611 and earlier".

i have gone through some blog and come to know that this .mdf has been created in sqlserver 2008. But i have sqlserver2005

can anyone please make a script with data for sqlserver2005 and send my mail id shekhar.manna@live.com.

Or do you have any better solution can you please share with me.

Publish cause CSS not working

When i deploy on local IIS let say http://localhost/beer/ , the page not working properly. No CSS styles and all main link result as The page cannot be found.

I'm using VS2008 btw.

Welcome Box control doesn't appear

My Welcome Box does not show up. I've got the same project as beer house, and am using their welcome box. All I changed was the name of the project. When it opens, I have just a big white square where the Welcome box image and text should be showing. I can't figure out what's wrong here?

converting BeerHouse to VB?

Hi All: I have a copy of Marco's book and I'm trying to work through it page-by-page. Up until now, I've only programmed .NET projects in VB, having started to migrate from VBScript.

In the past, I've used some public C#-to-VB converters to help me with C# examples, but the converters don't always do a perfect job. I'm trying to convert the project as I go along to VB, but keep getting stuck on what should be simple code-behind stuff...problem is I'm not familiar with C# syntax at all, and I'm not that familiar with OOP either (but I'm trying to learn).

I have the sample project open in an instance of VS2008, and my own version in another instance of VS2008, and try to go back and forth, but am still running into problems. Does anyone know of a "port" of BH from C# to VB that I could refer to? Or should I just give up and try to shift over to C# instead of struggling to rewrite blocks of code in VB?

Otherwise, I'm going to end up filling up the forums with lots of "why doesn't this work" types of questions until I'm up to speed, and I want to spare everyone that :)

I need to expand the products to include sizes (each with it's own price) and scents. I've added three new tables (all have addeddate and addedby as well):

ProductSizes
     ProductSizeID - identity and PK
     ProductID - int and FK
     SizeCost - money
     SizeDiscountPercent - int
     SizeDescript - sring
     SizeSKL - String

ProductScents
     ProductScentID - identity and PK
     ProductID - int and FK
     scentID - int and FK

Scentss
ScentID - identity and PK
Scent - nvarchar(50)

I created the relationships, and cascades. But now I'm not sure what to do. I have had very little experience with classes, n-tier development or doing things the right way, and I'm hoping to learn how from this project. I do have the book, but I don't understand everything in it. I could use some help.

I need to add a way for the shopkeeper to add/edit the scents first. I created App_Code\BLL\Store\ScentMethod.vb and App_Code\DAL\ScentMethodDetails.vb based on the respective shipping classes, removing prices and replacing title with scent, and adding the following if App_Code\DAL\StoreProvider.vb:

Dynamic Menu doesn't work in IE7

Hi guys. I am trying to set up my main menu to come out on hover over the main links. It is basically the same as the original beerhouse setup, I just changed the sitemap file around, and have made some CSS changes as well. The menu works as expected in FF3, but not correctly in IE7 (haven't tried other IE versions yet). Basically, the menu works but is hidden behind the page, as you can only view the very top portion when you hover over the main link. I found some references to problems with IE8 relating to the z-index, but those solutions are not solving my problem. Has anybody else tried to make the dynamic menus work with the beerhouse site and how did you solve this issue?

Health and Monitoring Chapter 3

Did anyone have trouble with the end of chapter 3 where you implement health and monitoring. I went to the solution and added a project named as he did. I then typed the class as he did. Then I added a reference the project. However after typing up the web.config I keep getting the error that the file or assembly MB.TheBeerHouse.CustomEvents can not be found or loaded. Is there a way to remove a reference? I hope I don't have to start over... I have been doing .net for about a year but I am still struggling with this book a little bit....

How to add search functionality in BH

hello everybody, does anyone know how to add the search functionality to The Beer House, by which i mean a textbox that you will enter your search string

Localization is not detecting Italy language

Hi guys im trying to study the theBeerHouse Asp.net 2.0 source code. but now im facing a problems with localization and Globalization. because i have change the language in the to Italy in the Browsers i have in my computer such as IE 7 and Mozilla Firefox 3 but the Italy language is not working. if any body can help me it will be great help for me please.
help me soon as possible.
