You are right! I already checked my network drive, but now looking again I find a dead drive. I killed it and VS works fine.

This means that File Open dialog (which is OS component) hangs doing something, the site is not getting opened yet (actual open happens when you click OK). Make sure you don't have stale network drives which are offline. OS may be trying to restore connections to mapped drives.

I think that happens because it remembers the last folder you used. I don't remember exactly how I reset it, but it I think it as by deleting the Visual Studio 2008 folder(I didn't have anything important there) in Documents and restarting the computer, or by reinstalling Visual Studio.

Thank you for quickly answer. I don't select the folder, Visual Studio freezes when i click on File-->Open-->Web Site like Shift+Alt+O.

I haven't fixed the issue, but I know how to prevent it from happening. It happens when I point the Open Website dialog at a folder with many large zip and rar files. When I copied my website away from that folder, everything is working again.

I have the same problem.. I just bought a new machine, and I've installed VS 2008 and SP1. I can create new websites etc, but as soon as I click on the "Open Website" on the File menu, it freezes. I've used VS 2008 on other machines in the past without any issues.

I've tried reinstalling both VS 2008 and SP1, but it doesn't work.

I'm using Windows Vista Enterprise x64.

I've no idea what zip files it would be trying to enumerate as I haven't actually been able to point it at a directory or site yet, the open site dialog never opened. The freeze happens right after selecting File > Open Web site.

OOPS! Wrong product -- not VS but a VWD EE 2008 question. (Posting elsewhere.)

DISPOSITION: Pilot error! (NOTE TO SELF: If the "Solution Explorer" is hidden in a tab and you open a project never before opened in VWD EE 2008 NOTHING will change -- no page references across the top -- and it will look like NOTHING has happened.)

Got it. Judging from what I see in the dump, VS is stuck in OS OpenFile/OpenFolder dialog call which is busy enumerating files in ZIP archives. Are you trying to open site from a compressed folder or archive?

Open Web Site freezes VS2008

I can't open one of our projects (DotNetNuke install) as every time i got to File>Open Web Site.. VS2008 hangs indefinitely. It's using up 50% CPU, and the RAM climbs slowly upwards, but nothing happens. Every other menu option runs fine. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
