Database Publishing Wizard

Do all versions of Visual Studio 2008 come with the Database Publishing Wizard? I have VS Standard and the Express editions, and in neither do I see the wizard. I am using the Vista OS, wiht all latest patches. I tried "reparing" VS Standard, and no change. I have SQL 2005 Standard installed too.

File/ New/ Website

I want to start a new website but when I go to File/ New/ Website, ASP.NET Web Site is not an option in my Visual Studio installed templates anymore. Anybody have a clue as to what I have done wrong? VS2008Pro.

I am trying to install on a test machine with Windows 7 Ult x64 and 4GB ram, Visual Studio SP1 but whatever I am trying it always fails. The error I am getting is the following:

Product: Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition - ENU - Update 'Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Design-Time Components for x86 - KB947888' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Debug looking for CodeBehind

I'm writing a small ASP page from "Beginning ASP.NET 3.5 In C# and VB. I created a code behind file called ListControls.aspx.vb. I can display the page in my browser and it works fine. The problem is when I try to run it using debug I get and error saying "Server Error in '/Site' Application". "The resouce cannot be found." The browser is trying to dispay a page called "CodeBehind.aspx" which was the name of the code behind file in the same folder but associated with a different webfrom. I deleted it but the debugger is still looking for it instead of looking at the real code behind file (ListControls.aspx.vb) associated with the form I'm trying to run throught the debugger.

Any Ideas how to correct this?

how to distinguish different VS (versions)?

I am frequently using various versions of VS(2003, 2005, 2008) simultaneously.
And all of them show the title "Microsoft Visual Studio" (in TaskBar, and in VS).

Double-clicking on solution, project (or other) file opens different VSs
that are undistinguishable by their appearance.
I can tell which VS was lanched only by going to
menu Help --> About Microsoft Visual Studio.

This is extremely uncomfortable, tedious and time-consuming

Is there any better or faster way to distinguish VSs' versions?
How can I change the default title from ""Microsoft Visual Studio"?

VS 2008 Database Connection Issue

Every time I try to connect a database in VS08 I receive the error below. I googled it but could not find any solutions. Has anyone experienced this before? Thank for the helps.

should the dll and the pdb file be excluded when a solution isn't running?

I have a solution in VS 2008 where the dll and pdb files in the bin folder aren't included in the application. They are in an excluded state because they are greyed out and when I right click on them I get the option to include them. Is this normal?

When a solution is cleaned under Build>Clean Solution is the dll that's created for the solution in the bin folder deleted. If so, is a new one created with the next build/compilation?

Why is the clean solution offered? I understand that it will delete a number of different files associated with to facilitate a fresh build/compilation but I am wondering why this is needed.

Is it a good practice to clean a solution before publishing or deploying it?

Local website: use directory other than INETPUB

This falls under the category of major annoyance. I have always located the website files in a directory other than inetpub, specifically on a different drive for ease of backup. I don't remember how I set VS up that way but whenever I created a new website the stub files were created in my preferred directory. I changed something somewhere along the way and now I can't seem to get this to work. Now when I set up a new site at http://localhost/ the stub files are created in the inetpub directory. Then I have to create a folder in my preferred directory, copy the stub folders into it then point IIS to the new physical directory. It's a pain. Isn't there a setting in VS that will do this? I'm sure the answer will make me feel stupid. Thanks.

Does anyone know how to get the "Next/Previous location" functionality working in vb?

In VS 2005, I was able to add 'Next' and 'Previous' buttons to return to the locations my cursor was at in Visual Basic (Customize toolbar, the icons were listed after selected the 'Edit' menu).

In VS 2008, I cannot find these. When I was working with C#, though, I noticed that I could use the mouse's forward and back buttons. Any ideas on how to use this feature in VB?

Dataset Designer will not allow add of query

I have a web project and have been designing query in the dataset designer for several months. All of a sudden yesterday, when I right click the table adapter to add a query (or anything else), all options are grayed out. Adding a new adapter is also grayed out. How do I get there reenabled?

Custom DLL for ASP .Net

Remote Debugging

Having issues with remote debugging.

I have VS 2008 running on a windows 2003 dev box in an open office envrionment (direct to the internet).

My remote server is a dedicated hosting server running windows 2008 64 bit.

I installed the remote debugger on the remote server from here.

I have accounts on the both boxes with the same username and password as suggested here for Computers on different domains (the microsoft page for the error I'm getting which is:

"Unable to connect to the Microsoft Visual Studio Remote Debugging Monitor name 'username@IP'. The Visual Studio Remote Debugger on the target computer cannon connect back to this computer. A firewall may be preventing communication via DCOM to the local computer. Please see Help for assistance.")

I ran the wizard on the remote box and am running the debugger as a service using the account with the same username/pass as the client box (after allowing that account to 'log on as a service' in the local security policy).

I have the monitor running on the remote box, with name 'username@computername'

When I try to attach (VS, debug, attach to process), I'm using default transport and have to use the IP of the remote box to connect (username@IP), I get the message that I've connected on the remote machine in the monitor window, but then get the error.

It seems I have most correct, I can connect, apparently it just can't connect back, I have window firewall off on the local dev box, any other ideas?

problem with asp.net development server

if i use firefox (3.5) as my default browser when using the built in development web server, I lose all my CSS, yet in IE its fine. Has anyone else experienced anything like this ? Is it a known issue ? or is there something im missing ?

I have a group of old and applications, some subapplications in 2.0.

I want to renew my root application in 3.5, but, if I try to debug Default.aspx with visual studio 2008 will return error compiling at my first .net 1.1 sub application.

Is there a way to limitate debugging area excluding some subdirectories?

Upgrade From VS2005 Pro to VS2008

I have been thinking of upgrading my software from VS2005 to VS2008 to take advantage of some of the new features.

However I have questions about campatibility with our existing web server.

Currently the web server is Windows 2000 with Framework 2.0 (ASP.NET2.0) installed.

There are several classic ASP & ASP.NET 2.0 sites currently on the server.

There is also MySQL5.0 installed.

Aside from installing the new Framework 3.5, what other compatibilty issues will there be.

Will the current classic ASP & ASP.NET 2.0 sites still work?

Will the new framework cause performance issues with this older server?

MySQL 5.0, any thoughts on this?

Unable to select the build/Run in Release mode while trying to use the MSVS Preformance Profiler

I have a web solution; however, I am unable to select the Build/Run in Release mode while using the Preformance Profiler. My only options are 'Debug' or 'Configuration Manager'. Does anyone have an idea why this is so?

Intellisense vb.net c#

I have a VB application. When I add a C# class I can't get intellisense to validate it. Keeps on giving me errors. However the application works perfectly fine.

Anyway of getting intellisense to work for both in the same web application?

Access is Denied While creating a new sql database file in APP_DATA in visual studio 2008

i have visula studio 2008 and sql server 2008 express

when i want to add a new database file to my project with "add new item..." and select sql server database(*.mdf) i get access denied error without any other information.

my project is in c:\web\login for example and im running windows seven x64.

i tried and i can add other files with add new item ti this folder but i can not even add database file to any other folder of my project.

what is wrong?

is there any accounts i should give permissions?

I am new to ASP.net. I come from a c++ development world.

The company I am now working for requires me to do some web development. Evidently my predecessors did not understand what they were doing very well and made a mess of the external website folder hierarchy, solution files, and source safe. I need to sort it.

My questions is, starting from the beginning, what are the different templates offered in vs 2008 and the differences?

I see I can make a new website from the file menu

I can also make a new ASP.NET web application from the add new project menu.

I can also make a new ASP.NET web service project.

I could also make new HTML, ASP, pages

What is a "web application"? as opposed to a page, or a website?

What is a "web service" as opposed to the former 3?

When using sourcesafe, should the entire website be one solution and project and checked in as such? How can we seperate various tasks to individuals, yet allow them to test and deploy seperatly without the entire website being effected?

Just the basics for now.

Although I use solutions and projects all the time in the C++ world, things appear to be quite different in the web world.

HTTP debugging (interception) with Fiddler of webapp launched from VS2008

I used HTTP Debugger Pro 6.3 and I am using HTTP Debugger Lite 4.4. between VS2008 internal webserver and webapp being launched from VS2008.

I installed Fiidler (v2.2.7.7 beta), see details below [1]
and it does not show anything for back-forth request/response of VS2008 internal webserver.

Fiddler doesn't capture localhost traffic, else it would be useless (you'd get spammed with all of the applications loopbacking to access local services and stuff)

This explanation does not make any sense to me:

I used HTTP Debugger Pro 6.3 and I am using HTTP Debugger Lite 4.4 now.

I have much more extensive and intesive external than local traffic
Especially due from autoupdating webapp to open browsers

You may always use filters
In Fiddler by clicking in left bottom corner of Fiddler switches/shows to :
- All Processes
- Web Browser
- Hide All

shados:
The trick, is to use "localhost." instead of "localhost" (notice the dot after the last letter). That will make fiddler capture the traffic, while still working with the local visual studio server (which ONLY works from localhost).

So hit F5 or something to start debugging, then add a dot in the URL after the T of localhost, and it will work.

This is improper for most devekopment/debugging purposes,
especailly if I am debugging ajax, http handlers, dll, one project calling webmethod of another, etc.

unable to start program

I am having VS 2008 SP! installed on my machine .I am buliding a ASP.NET MVC application. when i run my application from Visual studio a message windows comes with error "unable to start program "http://...." the system cannot find the file specified.I tried to solved it but not getting any solution that work.

Having to restart VS 2008 Web Development server after every change

I'm using Visual Studio 2008 for development and the Development Server (Cassini). When I make a change in the source page the change doesn't take effect in the Development Server until I manually stop it and let it restart again when I browse the page. It doesn't matter if I'm running with debugging or without. I did web development for years in VS 2003 and VS 2005 and never had this issue. I've searched for settings on this and can't find any. Any ideas?

800 Errors in error list?

Visual Studio 2008. When building my project I see about 800 errors in my error list pane. When I click on one, it opens the offending page and I see dozens of lines underlined in red. Then after about 2 seconds they disappear, as do the items from the error list.

Anyone know why this happens?

VS2008 and Publishing website

Okay, help. I'm not a guru. I've developed a website with vs2008.

When I publish with webconfig of the following, I get no errors, website seems to work fine on the surface. But, when I change it to false, I still get no errors, but the website won't even come up. I've done a bit of research, but it appears that with VS2008 you don't do the release setting? And, from what I've read, publishing with true is totally wrong. Any ideas?
