Improved ORM Model Designer and New Monitoring Capabilities for the New Version of ADO.NET Data Providers

Devart has recently announced the release of dotConnect products for Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite ADO.NET providers that offer Entity Framework support, LINQ to SQL support, and contain an ORM model designer for developing LINQ to SQL and EF models based on different database engines.

Entity Developer 2.50, a designer for modeling and code generation for ADO.NET Entity Framework and LINQ to SQL, included in Professional Edition of every dotConnect, was greatly improved. Now Entity Developer allows to view and edit data of tables, views, and model entities, create and execute Entity SQL, LINQ to Entities, and LINQ to SQL queries against the model, eliminating the need for additional applications and reducing time for accessing these operations.

Code generation for models was completely redesigned. New T4 like template language allows you to use the full power of C# or Visual Basic in the templates, allowing virtually anything you may want for code generation. Template editor now provides syntax highlighting, code completion, and parameter information features. Syntax highlighting allows you to easily distinguish text and code blocks.

The model got two new properties, affecting code generation: File Per Class and View Generation. The File Per Class property allows placing each model class to a separate file, and View Generation adds code for pre-generating views for Entity Framework models.

In LINQ to SQL, dotConnect providers offer better performance and new DbLinqDataSource class.

To ease the database application development, integration with improved Devart dbMonitor was added, allowing you to monitor interaction with database remotely.

New release of popular Watermark plugin for jQuery (3.0.2)

Last night I released the latest version of the Watermark plugin for jQuery (version 3.0.2).

The new release fixes a couple of bugs reported, and adds a potential performance boost when a page is submitted or unloaded.

For ASP.NET developers, the previous version had a bug that occurred when a validator was placed on a text box that also had a watermark in place. If a postback occurred without changing the contents of the text box, the watermark would end up being posted instead of a blank entry.

The new version looks for the existence of the Page_ClientValidate function, and hikacks it if it's found on the page, first hiding all the watermarks on the page, and then calling the original function.

I built-in the capability to look for other functions, so if I get feedback regarding other standard pre-form submission functions in ASP.NET or any other standard platform, I can easily add them to future versions of the plugin.

Another fix was allowing the plugin to work even if the page does not include a form element. It is not proper HTML to code a page like that, but the plugin now allows for it nevertheless.

A final note that some may find interesting: For the minified version (included in the download package), I switched from using YUI Compressor to Microsoft Ajax Minifier. I have found the MS minifier to be vastly superior in terms of code crunching, and in the process some of the tricks it employs actually produce code that should execute faster.

(BTW, if you want to see a direct comparison between YUI Compressor and Microsoft Ajax Minifier, I should have the latest version of my online JavaScript code compressor available within a week or two. Right now it only uses YUI, but when I push the new version into production you'll be able to switch back and forth between the two. URL: http://www.lotterypost.com/js-compress.aspx)

Simple Page Layout

Simple layout provides a single data view on each page. A field summary of the selected record is displayed on the side bar on left-hand side of the page.

Tabbed Layout

Tabbed master-detail layout will place each data view on a dedicated tab so that only one data view is visible at any time. The details of the selected master record are automatically displayed on the side bar.

Inline Page Layout

Inline master-detail layout is similar to the tabbed layout with one exception. The tabs are not displayed. A set of tasks named after each data view is displayed at the top of the side bar instead. The details of the selected master record are automatically displayed on the side bar.

Stacked Layout

Stacked master-detail layout lists all data views. This allows simultaneous access to all master and child records. The details of the selected master record are automatically displayed on the side bar. Stacked pages are usually longer than the height of the window. The side bar summary automatically keeps itself in the view when browser window content is scrolled.

A step-by-step self-paced tutorial and a robust library of code samples are provided to accelerate learning.

Introducing Versatile DataSources

Versatile DataSources contains two DataSource controls that support Dynamic Data and establish a strong separation of concerns between UI and business logic. EntityDAODataSource improves upon the ideas behind the DomainDataSource. POCODataSource lets you work with POCO classes.

EntityDAODataSource Features

For use with Data Access Objects ("DAO") that handle the CRUD ("create, read, update, delete") actions. Starter DAO classes are supplied for ADO.NET, LINQ to SQL, and ADO.NET Entity Framework. They already predefine the following methods: Update, Insert, Delete, SelectAll, SelectOne (by primary key), and Select (query by the filtering properties on the EntityDAODataSource). Your existing DAO classes can be used as well.
Defines strong separation of concerns between user interface and business logic, letting the business logic dictate everything possible. The web control developer only identifies the Entity class, Select method, and the Select method parameters. (Even the Select method and its parameters are optional as in many cases EntityDAODataSource can figure them out.)
Supports Dynamic Data. Introduces ADO.NET support to Dynamic Data.
Provides a mechanism for paging, sorting, filtering, and caching, which is delegated to the Select methods on the DAO classes. The supplied DAO classes already implement all of these capabilities.
Select methods are simpler to setup. They are always passed the SelectArgs object which passes in paging, sorting, filtering, and caching information. Select methods only need to create their query, consuming the sorting and filtering data. Then pass both the query and the SelectArgs object to the ExecuteSelectCommand for execution where paging and caching are applied.
Supports the DynamicFilter and QueryableFilterRepeater controls without using the QueryExtender control.
Supports Dynamic Data’s Url Routing to determine the table, action (read, edit, insert), and record. You don’t have to setup any Parameter objects in SelectParameters or WhereParameters properties.
Supports Associations (relationships) defined by Dynamic Data and used by Url Routing.
Provides design mode support, including a Configure command and editors for its SelectParameters, WhereParameters, and FilterExpressions properties.

POCODataSource Features

For any data entry form that takes an action based on the data input.
For use with the POCO class intended to run an action. Eliminates the middle step of transferring data from an intermediate form to the final object by handling two way databinding directly with the POCO instance.
Populates the properties of objects automatically. You can just invoke their “action method”.
Supports Dynamic Data. Apply the attributes of System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations to your POCO class and let Dynamic Data construct a matching user interface complete with validation. Allows separation of concerns design where the business logic dictates how to build the user interface.
Very simple setup. Either assign the POCO class type to the POCOTypeName property or use the CreatePOCOInstance event to return an instance of the object.
Provides design mode support

Versatile DataSources is free and available on CodePlex, complete with extensive documentation, examples, and source code. This is the initial release and intended for feedback and early adapters.
