I am currently re engineering the portal starter kit

-> layering (data\business\facade\framework)

-> multiple databases support

-> web services layer

-> windows client for admins

-> .NET 2.0 \ .NET 3.5

I like the portal starter kit because it's simple; I have used it in the past to kick off many web apps. Now it's time to get it up to date.

Most developers who started with IBuySpy/Portal Starter Kit have moved to DotNetNuke or Rainbow. You may have a hard time finding someone who can quickly help you. Since you've already discovered Snowcovered, you might want to see if they have a DNN module that meets your requirements and if so, move to DNN.

Most of the solutions are fairly highly architected, which means a fair amount of time learning how systems interoperate before you can even add functionality.

If I were in your shoes, I'd look at either Rainbow or DotNetNuke. They may have more functions than you need, but it's much easier to scale it down to what you need and ignore the rest than it is to start with something that doesn't have what you need and try to add on to it. Trust me on that one. :)

Thanks. I have looked at DotNetNuke and it seemed too robust and "community" like for what we were using it for. We are simply trying to have an information/documentation website that our company's distributors can log on to and get the most up-to-date information about our products. There was no need for such a complex site. So, we decided to go with the Portal Starter Kit (formerly known as IBuySpy). My dilemma is that now that I have been working with it...there are some functionalities that I woud like to add and I don't know how. I am not versed enough in VB or .Net (I've taken a couple of classes but that's about it) to be able to write the code to make these things happen. I have spoken with people at snowcovered.com...but all of the stuff they wrote only works with the "classic" version of IBuySpy. At this point, I either need a good vb.net programmer to pay to write this stuff for us or I need to find a site with code samples that actually work with the version we are running.

There is a competing product called DotNetNuke that's vb.net. It's very much like Rainbow, although it's a little prettier and nicer in most areas, although when it crashes or dies, it typically does it much harder and is more difficult to repair.
