I also thought of the same and added the script manager to each and every child page but I had problems when I click on the grid (Infragistics). When I click on the grid for the first time it gets all the values but eventually gives the following javascript error "Undefined is null or Not an object" and after that I am not able to access the grid again. When I have the script manager in the masterpage then I dont get this error but I get an error when I try to use the scrollbar in the grid. Does anyone know why this kind of things happen with update panel and script manager?

All,

I have been in touch with Microsoft about the TreeView lack of support for UpdatePanels issue (which meant I am still using the July CTP of Atlas and have not upgraded to the final ASP.NET AJAX version). They were first hoping they could provide TreeView support in UpdatePanels as part Orca's, the next version of Visual Studio (or .Net framework 3.5 that will ship with Orca's?). But yesterday I heard from them they now even doubt they can achieve that, so I think my only option to upgrading from the July CTP of Atlas to the final ASP.NET AJAX version anytime soon is to buy a TreeView control from ComponentArt or FlyTree who have recently upgraded their controls to support UpdatePanels.

I have no problems by placing scriptmanager controls on child pages only. I don't place it on the masterpage.

Thanks for the post, it is very helpful!

My problem is, however, I am using masterpage, and the ScriptManager control is in masterpage only. So I cannot call ScriptManager in my child pages. What should I do? The javascript function is in child pages, should I move them to masterpage?

Microsoft says it can't support TreeView, Menu and WebPart inside UpdatePanel, because they would need to change the System.Web namespace, and they don't have control over that (since this was created before MS AJAX came up).

However, the Preview CTP package of MS AJAX comes with modified versions of WebPart controls, like WebPartManager and WebPartZones (for the drag and drop to work in Firefox).

So the question is: If we have WebPart controls in the Preview CTP package, why doesn't Microsoft include a modified version of TreeView, Menu and WebPart there, with support to work inside UpdatePanel?

Also, for the TreeView control, the add and removal of nodes would be much nicer without a full postback.

I am really disappointed that Menu and TreeView controls are not supported in ASP.Net AJAX UpdatePanels. I have a production website that successfully uses Menu and TreeView controls in UpdatePanels using the July CTP of Atlas. Sounds like I will never be able to upgrade to the fully supported ASP.Net AJAX version. I know that the TreeView control can do an asynchronous callback for the TreeNodePopulate event, but I also need partial page postbacks for the SelectedNodeChanged event. In fact, I want PopulateNodesFromClient to be false anyway otherwise the atlas UpdateProgress control does not appear for TreeNodePopulate event asynchronous callbacks. And I extensively use Menu controls to create tabstrips in combination with a MultiView control. I hope Menu and Treeview support can still be added to the final version of ASP.Net AJAX.

First, who's email are you asking for? Second, you can send most people an email by clicking on their username (above the picture on the left side of the posting), and then scroll down the user's information and click 'Send Private Message.' This will allow you to send an email to someone without knowing their email address. That way, we don't have to post our email addresses on the forums for address harvesters to find. Less spam for everyone!

I tested it on both "Atlas" and Ajax Beta 2. Hope the final release will resolve these bugs.

You can check out my findings here. It was a pain in the butt to find out what the problem was, but can easily be worked around. I used Beta 2 with November CTP. It also has a javascript function provided by jackyang for setting the cursor to the end of the text inside the textbox, which IE doesn't handle. I haven't tested this on a textarea/multiline textbox, though.

At this time we are not planning on adding more options to this property. By writing a derived UpdatePanel you can add this functionality. I'm considering posting a sample to my blog at some point.

As I mentioned before, I already have derived the UpdatePanel to add this functionality, and I'm easily able to have it render as any HTML element, but I was hoping this would be a temporary fix. The fact that Atlas isn't even released and I already know I have to use a custom version of one of it's most important classes in order to maintain semantic HTML, isn't exactly ideal.

TreeView and Menu Support:

Getting Menu and TreeView to work inside UpdatePanels requires code changes to the controls themselves, which at the moment we can't do since we're not shipping a new version of System.Web.dll. There might be some hacky workarounds available but I'm not sure that they solve the entire problem.
