I just came across following issue...

I have a webcombo attached to a grid that is placed in an update panel. Webcombo is programatically attached to the column of the grid. On selecting an item from the webcombo any further postback is throwing the null object Javascript error (ultrawebgrid javascript). We are using the NetAdvantage_20072_CLR2x_ASPNET with NetAdvantage_20072_CLR2X_ASPNET_HotFix_1063. I have already subimtted this issue to infragistics. Just wondering if any of you have found any workaorund for this problem.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for your patience and understanding. It hasn't been easy to say the least, for us to keep up with these CTP's while still working on the upcoming release. From what I've heard of the changes to the UpdatePanel, I expect a much more stable interaction between it and the Infragistics controls.

As for the ATLAS issues, they are being given priority by the development team, however bug prioritization and scheduling is usually only done once a week. It is in the prioritization and scheduling where "ATLAS" bugs are pushed to the top of the stack.

The next CTP is due out in September. Though I don't know an exact date, I would expect to see the CTP sometime in the middle of September.

Thanks Tony, I'm sure it is challenging trying to hit a moving target, and while I would really like to take advantage of the Atlas functionality, at this point, it does not seem very likely in the near future for any of my existing apps which use Infragistics controls. For new things I'll have to make the call as to whether Atlas or Infragistics is more useful for the task at hand, until the two can play nicely together. I'm confident that in the end they will, and hopefully both will be better having gone through the pain.

As for my Atlas related issue involving the WebPanel expansion breaking after an Atlas Async postback, here is the response I got.

I have logged this behavior with our developers in our tracking system, with an issue ID of BR15475. It will be reviewed and assessed by our development team in approximately one week. At that time the issue will be prioritized and assigned an estimated time to completion, workaround or other resolution. You will be automatically notified when a fix is published for download. If some other resolution is reached, I will contact you with this information.

This is the standard response I would get for any issue, so it does not appear to me that the Atlas issues are of any higher importance than anything else, except that it may have some weight when it finally gets looked at, at next weeks bug prioritization meeting.

One last thing, did Microsoft indicate when the next CTP would drop?

Hi Rick,

In discussing these issues with the Atlas team at Microsoft, I've been informed that they've made some changes to the UpdatePanel for the next CTP that should help resolve many of these issues. That's the good news. The bad news is that the changes will require additional compatibility work for components to work inside of the UpdatePanel. I'm working to get an advanced preview of the changes so hopefully we can have a compatible version of our controls ready the same time the CTP is released.

For what it is worth, it is August 30th, and I'm also having issues trying to use Infragistics with Atlas. I'm using the Atlas July CTP, with Infragistics 2006 Vol2 CLR2 Private Hotfix build 1045, which I have confirmed is the absolute latest private hotfix available. The latest publicly released Hotfix is 1038.

As of the 1045 build, there are still style issues, their solution to these is to add an empty inline style tag into the body of the document somewhere, like under the UpdatePanel. This generally seems to solve the style issues that I've seen, but it prevents VS2005 from switching to design view because a style tag is not valid outside of the head element, at least not anywhere I've tried to put it.

There is also an issue with the WebPanel expansion no longer working after an Atlas Async Postback. I filed a Bug Report on that one this morning.

I also have a page with an UltraWebGrid on it, which receives the client side javascript "Unknown Error", after doing an Async Postback, the WebGrid is outside of the UpdatePanel, and seems to work perfectly ok, but the simple UpdatePanel which just contains a label that is updated with the server time when a button in the panel is clicked, does not work, and throws the "Unknown Error" error. If I can figure out how to create a simple project to recreate this one, I'll submit a bug report, but I haven't figured out what the magic combination is yet that is causing the error. I did try to create a test project with WebGrids on it along with the Atlas Update panel, but the grids and the UpdatePanel work ok on my sample, so go figure.

Anyway, I'll try to postback here when and if I get anything useful. I know they are working hard to resolve the ATLAS issues, and it is BETA, so I'll cut them some slack for the moment. When ATLAS goes production, I'm sure they will have worked out the majority of the issues, since it would obviously be very bad for their business if other component vendors supported ATLAS and they didn't. Granted, that does not help those of us trying to use it now, but such is life when you live on the edge of technology...

Trust me, everything possible is being done to get the hotfix out ASAP. QA was forced to hold up the hotfix due to a regression issue that was found earlier this week. The issue has been fixed, but regression testing is not yet complete. We expect to be ready to release on Friday, but there is a chance it will be released today (Thursday July 27).

I evaluated infragistics and when I could not get it to work with Atlas I dumped it. Plus, there seems to be alot of baggage when using infragistics controls for asp.net apps. There winform controls are pretty good.

Thank you all for reporting these issues to the Developer Support Department, and for your patience and understanding. As I have posted in my blog, as of today all logged Atlas compatibility issues have been fixed! I will post more information on the progress of the hotfix as the date approaches.

To Infragistics' credit, Tony suggested above that I contact him, so I called him yesterday. He really is pushing to get any Atlas issues fixed in this hotfix. The development team hadn't yet looked at two of my Atlas incompatibility bug reports and he got them in front of the development team. If you're having Infragistics problems with Atlas, please get those bug reports in ASAP--and let Tony know if you need them to have more attention. I don't want to get over my current hurdles and find new ones once the hotfix comes out.

Tony: one suggestion I have for you is to get Infragistics' non-toll-free phone number published on your web site. Even though I'm in the U.S., it makes it difficult for non-US customers to contact Infragistics. I suspect your UK phone number is also toll-free (but I don't know about how that works in Europe). You can't conveniently talk to employees like Tony from the toll-free number, but on the toll-free number, you can get the direct phone number for Infragistics. I'll let Tony publish his phone number if he wants to. But I've always found it odd that Infragistics doesn't publish the direct phone number on the web site.

I credit Tony a lot for answering his phone and taking the time to talk with me (a customer). There are some companies where this can be a very difficult thing to do. However, if you have a problem and are thinking about contacting Tony, may I suggest that you first file a bug through the normal channels and have either your incident number or bug number(s) available when you contact him. Because I had my issues filed, he was able to quickly look at them and get action taken on them. I didn't have to waste his time. He also followed up to let me know the status.

Now all we have to do is see if we can wait until the July 21 hotfix...gotta have a discussion with the boss today.

1) Infragistics is getting better at being more transparent about what is going on, but you guys still need to get better. For one thing, please keep your blog up to date on the current status. When you let Microsoft know that there is a problem with ATLAS, update your blog again. Your blog is our window into the people behind the company wall. We are much happier knowing that someone who can do something knows about the problem and is working on it.

This is great feedback, and I will definitely try and do a better job of posting information to my blog.

2) The built in style support of the various controls from Infragistics is really a crutch for users. We really should be moving everything to external CSS files but all of the design tools for Infragistics make it very difficult to do this. For example, the cssclass property is overridden by any properties set directly on the control. The work that is being done to move the styles into the head section seems like a waste of time to me. I think your time would be better spent giving us versions of your existing theme files that are already setup to use external CSS files. Make that the official way to setup the Infragistics controls and depreciate the direct styles.

Heh, of course I would also like to see CSS Control Adapter support for Infragistics controls, but they may be a little blue sky.

It's as if you're looking at my project plans. We are in 100% agreement here, and are working on creating presets which allow you to use an external stylesheet, as well as better support for this use case.

Creating a CSS Control Adapter is unfortunately a ton of work and quickly becomes overly complex, since there is a great deal of javascript behaviors attached to the HTML skeletons.

Keep an eye out for out Beta of NetAdvantage 2006 Volume 3, I think you'll love what you see. And please continue the great feedback, it's extremely valuable to all of us.
