How can i start my new web application? what kind of architecture is good for a small web application?

I want to make a web application for a photographer with the admin module, user module, (photo gallery + Content Management System) , and later on payment gateway system. I am using Asp.net 2005 and sql server 2005.

Has anyone found a way of getting the photo ablum to work within medium trust level hosting.

An error is return when trying to view a image using domain/Handler.ashx?PhotoID=1&Size=S

System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

Within the starterkit its self, this just shows up as a failed image white box with a red cross.

I would also be keen for any tips on how to debug this more.

but somehow when i test it out my output webpage turn out differently. The side view doesn't stay in the content page. instead its outside. This is how it looks...

Personal Site Starter Kit - How to get started

I downloaded the starter kit and found the zip files. I expanded the files into a directory and don't know how to get going. Visual Web Developer wants a project file and I don't see one.

I also don't see any "installation" file. This is probably very obvious, but not to me.

Hi,
I have followed Sue's tutorial on how to upload and configure my website. I am still having an issue when I try to configure permissions/roles using the ASP. Net configuration tool.
I am able to start it but when I click Security I get the error below. Also below is my web.conf file. I am hosting with gate.com, incase someone is with them as well and has had a similar experience.
If someone has maybe they can explain to me what some of those xml values mean. I can follow a tutorial but I am poor at troubleshooting because I don't know what all those valuse mean; provider, rolemanager etc.. Thank you.

I just started to get the above error all of a sudden during the bulk import. I was importing pictures all day and all of a sudden, I started getting this error message and I cannot import a single picture any more. My web application timeout is set to 3000, but it times in less than a minute. The culprit seems to be the AddPhoto function. I restarted SQL Server 2000, IIS, and the whole machine, but to no avail. There's no code change since it was working earlier in the day. Any ideas?

I'm getting an System.InvalidOperationException: The SMTP host was not specified. when I try to use 2.0 password reset. I am using hashed password and when it trys to send email with new password I getting the above error

Upload Folder

Hi I would like to know about the upload folder in the personal kit. I uploaded about 30 pictures and it worked fine the only thing I can see that might become a problem for me is that when I logged in to manage and edit... the upload folder still contains the pictures. I want to creat a new album with new pictures. I am working with a fear amount of pictures and don't want to waste time with the uploading process by uploading and finding I have more pictures in my newly created album then I want. Is this something I am going to have to troubleshoot.

Very Dissapointing

This starter kit is quite the headache. I played with it in beta and finally gave up. Now that I have the actual release version, I see that not much has changed. In reading this forum I was able to at least get the kit running on my remote host, but have no easy way to create my user account on the database. The documentation is weak at best. I was hoping to use this kit as a jumping off point for exploreing the new features of 2.0... but I see I need to look else where...

I'am adapting the starterkit to my needs and want to display a specific photo from database using the databind methods used throughout the program. That is: using the Handler.ashx but without looping through the complete set of available photos. Has anybody a solution to this prpblem.

Personal Starter Kit for MS Access

Hello everyone,

I am new to .NET and I too have been trying to work with the Personal Starter Kit as a learning tool. Unfortunately, my host does not allow the user of SQL Express 2005 and SQL Server will cost extra.

I converted the "personal" database into MS Access and then used the Sample Access Provider Starter Kit to modify the Login controls to use a MS Access database. Now the project runs on two MS Access databases.

Well I'm at the end of my rope, hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction.

I have downloaded and installed .NET beta2, SQL 2005 Express and Visual Web Developer Express beta2.
My operating system is Windows Server 2003 SP1 with IIS. I'm simply trying to publish the Personal Web Site sample included with VWD Express. I've created a new web site with no changes to the template and used the "Copy Web Site" option to copy the web site to the IIS directory (which is a sub dir of the root). I have set the default page in IIS for that directory to default.aspx. Whenever I try to go http://localhost/rob I get "The page cannot be found". Even if I go straight to http://localhost/rob/default.aspx I get the same thing. I've tried to put up a simple page with only a line of text and I get the same results. Using CTRL F5 within VWD Express runs the site with no problem. The ASP.NET tab in IIS properties for the web site is version 2.0.50215.0.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cannot open user default database

I'm sorry if this question has already been anwered, but I couldn't find it in previous threads. Anyway, I installed the Personal Site Starter Kit and SQL Server Express (both are local). I then created a user for myself, and then I receive the following error when I log into the site:

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
Login failed for user 'MARS\ASPNET'

Apparently, SQL Server Express doesn't like my local ASPNET account. Does anyone know either how to fix this or where I can go to troubleshoot this problem?

Accessing "ImageID" on details.aspx page

Hi,

I have setup the PWS as my personal site and got it working pretty well. At this point I am making changes and additions.

I am currently trying to add comment functionality to the photos in the different albums much like on Facebook for example. I have written all the middle tier logic to do this and created the required tables in the database however I am stuck when it comes to obtaining the "ImageID" which I need in order to pull up the comments for a given image in an album. If you take a look at my site:

You will see that the individual images are displayed in a paginated fashon allowing users to click though all the images in a given album. This is standard PWS functionality. However, when I look at the code associated with this page (details.aspx) I cannot seem to gain access to the "ImageID" for the image being currently displayed...

Any input would be most helpful!

Getting SMTP to Work with GoDaddy

My host is GoDaddy and I have the entire PWS Kit working except for the email. I have put all of the appropriate smtp settings in the web.config and I'm still having no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I just download the kit and installed successfully.

In my machine I have Visual Studio 2005 Acdemic Standard and Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition.

Then I want to create an instance of the starter kit, click File, then select New Web Site from the menu. This will

open the New Web Site dialog box.

But I haven't seen the icon of "Personal Web Site Kit", why?

Picture viewing is very slow

Viewing pictures from the album is very slow going from one picture to the next. I'm trying to see where the issue might be. I try to keep my picture sizes fairly small. I'm hosting with GoDaddy so bandwidth might be the issue as well. Anyone had similar experiences?

Installation of personal website starter kit complete, usr and roles setup and runs perfectly locally under CTRL+F5

logged in with admin and uploaded photos etc.

After installing on my webhosts SQL/2005 server, I run and receive following. It's worrying because there does not appear to be any reference to the error in this forum.

Any ideas how to resolve?

Guestbook or any other tab/link made invisible unless logged in?

Does anyone know how difficult it would be to make one of the tab's or links invisible unless someone is logged in? I'm using JW's extended kit and am building a video page I would only like visible to people who have a resistered username and password.
