hi there.. do you have an animationextender inside the updateprogress?? i have the same error with an update panel that has an animationextender inside and it was solved after i removed the animationextender. Anyway it worked ok at runtime with and without the animationextender.

nope, the only thing inside my updateprogress controls is an asp:image control and some text
