I would like to suggest that the browser abstraction layer use the provider pattern for the browser abstraction layer and document how developers can write a provider for the layer if need be. This would squeal any developer's fears that if another browser that isn't supported by microsoft presently suddenly needs to be supported in an application, they could write a provider to support that browser.
