I'm trying to rename the ID of a gridView and I get this error message, along with this error:
Compiling project 'C:\Documents and Settings\user01\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\WebsiteCache\MyProject\Refactor\4_App_Code.dll' for refactoring
error CS0006: Metadata file 'C:\Documents and Settings\user01\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\WebsiteCache\MyProject\Refactor\4_App_Code.dll' could not be found
Any clue as to what i'm doing wrong would be great! thanks
I have the same problem. Seems that I cannot use the IDE to rename any of the controls in my ASPX page. Instead I am forced to go to Source view and rename it manually and then switch back to IDE view. This isn't a HUGE problem for me since I work mostly
in Source view anyways but it is rather annoying when I am using the IDE being forced to go back and forth.
It appears to me that the error comes after some sort of failure in refactoring the project. Other problems I have that may be related is when I rename a variable at the declaration - if I use the IDE to rname the variable from say sFoo to sFoo2, it fails
when doing this with a dialog saying: "Failed to find definition."
This is a known issue (scheduled to be fixed in the first Service Pack). There are a couple of scenarios if you open more than one instance of Visual Studio where this folder location gets inadvertantly removed. The work around is to create this folder manually
prior to launching VS. ie. From a command window type the following:
md "'C:\Documents and Settings\user01\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\WebsiteCache\MyProject\Refactor"
I think I found another solution that also provides a workaround for "Could not find a part of the path ...\PublishState.xml" error when closing "Copy Web" tab having published to a remote site.
In a nutshell it's a four-step process:
Close all instances of Visual Studio
Delete folders and files in the following directory
"Documents and Settings\<%YourUserID%>\...\WebsiteCache\<%YourProjectName%>"
Remove the line related to your project from
"Documents and Settings\<%YourUserID%>\...\WebsiteCache\WebSites.xml"
Open the project from within Visual Studio, rather than clicking on solution file.
Start re-naming control ids and try publishing the site
