I'm stubborn and learn hands on, so I decided to do a quick install of DNN using the automated install provided by my ISP.  It went beautifully and, during the install, I selected "portal" not "host", thinking I wasn't planning to host multiple portals.

so now it's up and running, but I can't make heads or tales of how to install additional modules.  The limited instructions I see refer to Host account and modules menus, and I have neither.

do I need to uninstall this thing and reinstall (hopefully not) to get this functionality, or is there a a script I can rerun to make the change (nothing I need to save on the site yet, so I don't care if it reruns).

If I do need to reinstall, how does one do that?  Delete all the directories, delete the DB and start again?

    All advice accepted humbly....

What exactly do you mean by install new modules?  Are you trying to include some functionality from one of the included modules on a page or include a module from another source?

There was a document on this site that I now cannot find that took you through the basics of uploading a new module and using modules on a page.

you might try this site for a quick video tutorial.

Your ISP may have limited your ability to install modules other than the standard DNN modules. When DNN is installed, there is no constraint on how many portals can be created. However, if your ISP has created a custom installation process that does not give you access to the "Host" user account associated with your installation, you will not be able to install any modules that aren't already installed.

It's quite possible that you have a portal on a shared DNN instance (i.e. the ISP is the "Host" and all customers have individual portals). If this is the case, you will have to go through the ISP to see if they will install additional modules for you (likely not).

Bottom line is you need access to the Host account to install modules, and if you don't have this then you are either going to have to get this from the ISP for your portal (if it's not a shared instance), or you have to choose from their installation offerings that will give you a portal with Host-level access.

Long overdue, but thank you to both of you.

I FTP'd into the account and noticed the default install dumped a big help directory in there, so I've been reading away.

Found the host account and happily went through the exercise of adding modules.

Still a newbie, but one pixel up from virgin.  :)
