Because DNN does not support localized content yet, and I need to make a multilingual portal, I thougth of the following solution: one (child) portal per language. Is this a good idea? If yes, what would be best:

    A) One language is parent portal, all others are childs

    B) One parent portal which basically is only a splash page (choose language) and all languages are each a child portal

I have some requirements, and I hope I can do them in that scenario:

    1) One "Sign In" for all portals, because the user should think it's one

    2) Some flags, buttons or a list on the top of ALL pages, with wich you can change the language on the fly at ANY time

I think requirement one is a out-of-the-box feature of DNN, but how to implement requirement two?

    Thanks alot, Rainer.

P.S.: Is this concept also a good idea when having in mind that DNN will sometimes (hopefully soon) will support localized content?

    Hi !
I'm using DNN 3.1.1 and have multilingual content.
Are using third part modules for the multilingual text, from Apollo Software. Are using MLHTML and MLAnnouncements (Freeware)
Are using MLLanguage Selector (Payware), for users can select language from flags.

You can look at my site KalaK Greenland

    Hi Rainer,

I'm curious as to which path you took regarding your multilingual portal setup?

I am currently in a similar situation.  I'm leaning towards scenario B (one parent, all languages are children).  Just wondering what your experience with the setup has resulted in...

There are a number of localization solutions out there.

If you want, you can use one protal for all different languages. If you buy the tools from Apollo Software (you can get them from snowcovered and some are free downloads from his site) or another provider (I haven't tested those so I can't comment on them).

With the tools from Apollo and using a single portal solution you can follow three approaches:

    1. all pages contain multi lingual modules (these modules have the ability to manage multi lingual content) and depending on the language selected by the user (or automatically by the browser) the language of choice is being displayed
    2. you have (alternative) pages for each language because you need to use modules that do not have multi-lingual capabilities. The selected language determines which pages are shown.
    3. a mix of the above.

I usually end up with a mix of both apporaches, which is fine provided that the homepage of the site is using the first approach. Because this gives the user the idea that the website is truely multi-ligual.

With one portal you obviously have met your requirements.

    Good Luck,

    Peter

An example can be seen here: http://www.witgelekruisaruba.org (be patient it is a slow site).

Peter, could you elaborate a little on your point 2 (alternative pages for each language) and how to set it up. I have a dual English/French portal in the making and uses both Apollo stuff and the cool Schwing Multilanguage Skinhelper. But I still have content that does not fall within and thought it would be nice if I could makes pages visible/invisible as per language.

    Thanks, Niels

PS: Moderators, could you change my status to unmoderated? It used to be like that before the forums were updated. Thanks.

    Niels,

Using Erik's page localisation tool you can do this. Simply set the pages you want to be displayed in either language. (PS You need to change the skin and add the appropriate skin tokens)

    Hope this helps,

    Peter

Thanks for the tips everyone!  I have to build an English/French site and was finding myself quite lost with all the options.  :)
