    Hi

    1. Can I install Visual Studio 2005 on an XP PRO SP1 machine with VS 2003 already installed on it?

    2. Can Sql Server 2005 be installed on an XP PRO SP1 machine with Sql Server 2000 already installed on it?

    Thanks in advance

The answer to both questions is Yes.  I will caveat that by saying that I have installed VS 2005 and VS 2003 side-by-side on an XP Pro machine without any problems whatsoever, but I haven't tried that with SQL Server.  I do know however that side-by-side with 2000 is a supported scenario for SQL Server 2005.

I'm not sure if this answers your question or not (Because I'm running XP Pro SP2).

But, I'm currently running, the following software on my development laptop, with no unusual problems.

    Visual Studio 6.0
    Visual Studio 2003
    Visual Studio 2005

SQL Server 2000 (Devloper Version, I think)
SQL Server 2005 (Standard Version, I think)

Been running the 2005 software on the same machine since Beta 2 (with the requisite uninstall/install process for each upgrade)

Everything works great, It's a fantistic change from the days when you basically had to format your machine to go from beta to RTM.

    Thanks for the responses.

I am using XP PRO SP1 and I could not install VS 2005. The installation process said that SP2 is required on an XP PRO machine.

I am not sure how safe it is to install SP2 on a machine (IBM Thinkpad X31) that is already loaded with lots of development applications. (VS 2003, Biztalk 2004 etc...)

    Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks

Sorry you are right - XP SP2 is indeed a pre-requisite for installing VS 2005.  It is safe to upgrade from XP SP1 to XP SP2.  In fact it is recommended highly since XP SP2 has a number of key fixes including tighter security.
