I am in a position where I need to learn .NET or start looking for a new career.  I would say on a scale of 1-10, I am a 8.5 when it comes to knowledge of HTML.  5 in knowledge of JavaScript.  and 0.8 when it comes to ASP.  Basically, because of my job, the technology has passed me by.  I want to know what I can do to learn .NET.  What steps do I need to consider to take in order to go from where I am now to using .NET?  I am so far back, I do not even know where to begin.  I need some help in finding that starting place.  I would appreciate any advice.  thanks

Hi Nate, welcome!  I think a great place to start is the QuickStart tutorials on this site:  http://www.asp.net/Tutorials/quickstart.aspx, and now's a good time to get into .NET since the new version (2.0) is just coming out this week, since everybody's on a bit of a learning curve to get up to speed on all the new features.  The best way to learn .NET of course though is by using it, so as you work through your first application, we're here to help!

Get a couple good books, get a copy of Visual Studio (I think there's a free one for VS2005... 3 mos demo or something like that on MS.com right now) and sit down and start typing.

Im in your same boat... started cold turkey a month ago per work requirements never having touched ASP.net OR VB.net... CFML and SQL were all I knew, so the learning curve for object oriented programming was tough.

Now a month into it, its much easier and people here are great about helping you solve problems, so make use of the forums =)

As Datagridgirl said the best way to learn is to start using it. However you need some good books for ASP.NET 2.0 currently I am reading "First look at ASP.NET 2.0". Its a pretty decent book.
