Sorry, but I don't have such a folder ...\ISAPI. What's wrong? I just downloaded the WebPartTemplatesforVSNetSample. While installing, the routine asks me about the location of the Microsoft.Sharepoint.dll. But I don't know where to get this assembly.

Might it be because I do not have MS Sharepoint Services run on my machine, but work on such a site that is run on a remote web server?

Yes it's because you don't have an installation on that machine, you can either bring the dll to your machine (any location is fine as long as you reference it in that place), or you can navigate to it over you network and use it remotely, If the latter creates no issues for you, do that.

you can find this on a server where Sharepoint is installed.

Try to find it in the GAC at C:\windows\assembly\gac_msil\Microsoft.SharePoint

Sivilian was almost correct. Mine is located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\ISAPI\Microsoft.SharePoint.dll

Keep in mind that SharePoint development occurs on the SERVER that has the SharePoint Services / MOSS installed. You may operate inside a virtualized environment as well, however it will be a virtualized SERVER.

I've seen blog postings with 2 different approaches. Since I'm waiting for my VM to be set up, I don't yet have a server with WSS available.

One approach is to edit your registry to make it appear that WSS is installed on your machine.

Another approach is to remove the requirement of the VS WSS extension for WSS server.

Neither seems to be blessed by Redmond, the 1st seems cleaner.
