Hi Fez, I hope you are not actually using these sample applications. http://chinakingtakeout.com is not much more than a shopping cart. That should be way below your skills when you have a masters degree from a top 50 university. An on-line 3D flight simulator
or something like that would be a better match for your education :) (just kidding). The other web site didn't pull up for me.
"Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes."
I do not really see any major difference between these data driven applications, from shopping cart to financial applications to what ever xxD flight simulator. It is just handling data, front and back. If assigned to do more complicated task, I would love
to accomplish. But now, that is what I feel like to do. I got to do more job hunting... Regards FEng
Though the workings of the application may not be as important, it's still good to make sure they 1. Work 2. Put forward a good impression You cannot send out a link that does not work to someone looking to hire you. You're better off sending nothing. Second,
some simple images or even a different font on the Chinaking site would put forth the image that is more professional. (not saying it's not professional, mind you, just talking about a level higher :) ) When I got my first job out of college, all I had was
a portfolio of programs I had done as homework in school. Printed it in sharp color, slapped a cover on it, and knew how to describe what was going on. It was that extra step that differentiated me from the others and got me my first job. my $.02
Sorry for the mistake. Should be http://persiangrocery.com. Although I am good at business logic and underneath programming. The image part is my weekness. My partner Vijay is super. I need to work more to improve my presentation :) Regards, Feng
Alright - i have found out that in today's economy if you can sell yourself - you are still able to get high salary - surprised? But it is true. So how do you get it - ofcourse first you have to get an interview. You are scheduled for interview - either you
have 100% chance of getting the job or 0. So how are you going to score 100%? Ofcourse, for ESL folks - brush up some and two - dont just walk in with your portfolio which consists of notepad, pen, calculator and few copies of your resumes. Walk in with your
laptop. Create a presentation using ppt. Create a small 10-15 min movie type presentation that will summarize your skills, and create your presentation in such a way that you are basically selling your services. I did it like this: First a bit of Audio(Wav
file)/Video(PPT) -> Thank you for the opportunity for this interview and blah blah blah. Second, continue -> Skills set -> VB.NET, IIS admin, SQL Server admin. Three, talk about work experience -> show some screen shots. Four, Why you would be an asset for
the company. Thats it. Oh dont just sit there when the presentation is running, know your presentation and timings. You can talk while the presentation is on so they will know that you have good communication skills as well. This will show your business skills
and will allow the interviewer to see the extent you can go to achieve something - go getter baby. And believe me - you will get good salary - if not, definitely an advantage over other candidates. Goodluck all of you....
Wow... I'm wondering what kind of interview allows you to do a Power Point presentation. If you are a consultant presenting a project/idea, maybe... But in an interview??? I have conducted and had plenty of interviews; in none of them I have provided/seen/required
a power point presentation. I agree that walking in with a laptop instead of notebooks might be a good selling point, but the presentation... very unlikely to happen from my experience.
Do presentation on an interview? I believe when you are called for an interview, you already know that you will be ask all sorts of question by the interviewer...of course presenting yourself is part of it but the main goal of an interviewer is know whether
you are fit for the job by asking situational and tecnical questions. Selling and presenting products is another story. :p
I cant believe that people have not bought this idea because I have done 2 presentations so far. One was done back in 2001 and another last year. They both worked and both the employers were impressed by the presentations. My current employer did tell me that
I had upper advantage because of my extra effort towards obtaining the job. Yes I am a consultant but I dont sell any products via presentation. I sold my services to the employer.
Thanx covo :) one thing i forgot to mention - the presentation will help you a lot if your interview is with business manager and if you show your code/screen shots of whatever you have done, technical interviewer might be interested. In my case - I had included
screenshots of websites I did, and some coding - showed the interviewer about the coding standards and other documentation standards I followed in my past work experiences. Ofcourse I spoke through the entire presentation as to what was going on. And dont
just start your presentation - tell the interviewer I have a small presentation about myself about 10 minutes and I had like you to see - and do this as soon as the interview starts - because then it is all going to be Q&A (which is what the interview is all
about). If the interviewer is interested only then show it - or else you are going to waste yours and his/hers time. And as I mentioned in my earlier posts - I have used it twice - they were all happy as to what I showed them :) I am not saying it surely is
the way to go but one possibility - worked fine for me - maybe you might want to give a shot....Goodluck...
