fetcher Thank you for you help, i actualy connected to FireBird SQL, the options of this database looks very impresive (or maybe it's just becouse i never worked with nothing else then MySql). I wanted ask you 2 more question and hope it's ok. 1. Is
there group that work on this database or it's single man who hold whole project ? I ask it becouse i worry and i dont wont start rebuild my half finished project to FireBird SQL and then descover one day that database project is closed, becouse it can happen
if project have only one developer who holds it all. 2. My ather big worrie is alsow about speed of FireBird SQL, since you work with this database, i wanted know your opinion about this database speed. Can it hold and work good on site with alot users ? Just
want know you opinion. And thanks alot for you help!
Same here, wondering the same. Downloaded the bugger. Haven't found a free manager for it except for IBAccess and it's majorly outdated. Have you found any?
They really need to add an "edit" command to this forum.... Anyways, found one called IBConsole. It looks semi-nice. Only thing missing is the actual root login/pass needed for Firebird when first installed. None of the pseudo "documenation" available mentioned
anything.
Hi, There's a group of people that are working on the database. There's also a foundation backing it (I think from what i read)
http://www.firebirdsql.org/ff/foundation/ Considering the speed it is very fast, not as fast as MySQL but almost as fast and it can cope with many users and many gigabytes of data. I've read this in a
forum: " The last recorded Firebird 1.0/Interbase database size I've read is more than 200GB and can accomodate a maximum of 32TB. I don't think there's a question of capability and reliability for Firebird when it comes to sufficing most of our needs in the
company. " if you have time read these posts
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=116360 The support on the mailing lists is great. you can go there and ask for help in tuning your database and your queries till it is very fast.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Firebird-general/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Firebird-general/ The free manager I use:
http://www.ibexpert.com/ (The free personal edition) Coming from MySQL you might get frustrated at the beginning since Firebird doesn't have auto-increment fields. You have to create a generator and trigger it with a trigger.
But with IBExpert that's very simple to do. Also Text field types are called BLOB subtype 2...... Oh and Firebird doesn't allow you choose this date like MySQL does 2003-2-31 :)
IB Expert looks pretty neat. Unfortunately I cannot use it until the peeps at firebird decide to release instructions on how to actually use the database. As it stands now, been unable to find ANY documentation on how to actually connect to firebird the very
first time. Need a username and password? Well yeah, that'll be great once the l/p is released to the public, LOL!
If you download the latest release canditate you'll find release notes.. I took this from it: The documentation for InterBase v 6.0 applies also to the current FireBird release. A beta version of InterBase(tm) 6 manuals is available in Adobe Acrobat format
from: ftp://ftpc.inprise.com/pub/interbase/techpubs/ib_60_doc.zip A structured Documentation Index is maintained on the Firebird community site at
http://firebird.sourceforge.net/index.php?op=doc This is work-in-progress and all additions are welcome - send a message to firebird-docs@lists.sourceforge.net Some installation guidelines and other
HowTos may be found in the documentation area which can be linked to from
http://www.firebirdsql.org or more directly from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/firebird The main repository for user and technical issues is the IBPhoenix site -
http://www.ibphoenix.com IB Phoenix also publishes a comprehensive subscription CD on a regular basis (single issues also available) which contains manuals published by them – Using Firebird and The Firebird Reference
Guide. Some additional documentation may be discovered by visiting the Borland techpubs area:
http://www.borland.com/techpubs/interbase/
Hmm, thanks for the links but I found those a long time ago (a few days, I believe). Anyways, the Quick Start Guide claims that the intial user's l/p is SYSDBA/masterkey. This is, unfortunately, wrong for the newest firebird, as the people who are working on
firebird must of changed it with the newest version and failed to post the correct info.
Shannara I am using last version of Firebird SQL, and the login ans password are some. I had no problem for connect and work with Firebird SQL with this login and pass.
fetcher Thank you for all you helping and answering to my questions. I made some research about Firebird SQL and found that their community very good, and always willing to help. The triggers for auto increment is not problem actualy, it even better,
since it give more control to auto increment proccess. About BLOB i didnot knew, i was thinking thats it's VARCHAR :)
