have a web project where I want to clean up files, both deleting and renaming, can't find any delete or rename when I have files selected in the solution explorer, this link indicates that delete functionality is there,
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/vstudio/0ebzhwsk(v=vs.90).aspx,
but not in my vs2008? surely there is an easy straight forward way to do this?

Just right-click on the file in Solution Explorer. There should be rename and delete options in the context menu.
Also make sure you are viewing the Solution Explorer window and not another window. View menu -> Solution Explorer or CTRL + W, S.
If that still doesn't work, do you have some plugin installed that could be overriding the built-in Visual Studio functionality?
