in 2012, Neudesic added a valuable feature that is very useful for preventing the loss of posts/replies during the compostion phase; prior to that one could lose substantial time by accidentally navigating away from an unposted post/reply.
suggestion: imho, it would be a very good idea to tweak the default for the "are you sure that you want to navigate away from this page?" dialog box from "OK" to "Cancel"
...
my reasoning: the forums.asp.net member is most likely to see this message while she/he is typing a post/reply; when typing, usually there is at least one space between every word; unfortunately, pressing the
space bar is an alternate way for responding to the selected control for a dialog box.
imho, it's far better to accidentally cancel the "are you sure that you want to navigate away from this page?" dialog than to accidentally click "OK".

Hello Terri, thank you for your reply ... please note: i am not talking about the
clarity of the message text, rather, i am talking about the
default setting of the dialog box button; unfortunately, imho, that
default for
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/DOM/window.onbeforeunload or any simular implementation
should be "Cancel". FWIW.
While your answer appears to apply to the message text, sadly, it also appears to apply
inablility to set the default button.

This is browser-dependent and not under our control (refer http://stackoverflow.com/questions/276660/how-can-i-override-the-onbeforeunload-dialog-and-replace-it-with-my-own). Current browsers have clearer messaging...presumably you are using IE8 if you are seeing "are you sure that you want to navigate away from this page?"
This is what I see in IE9:
Chome:
Firefox:
We could potentially take a different approach and write something custom, but I honestly don't think it's worth the time.
