I build web sites and pages for office use where I am working now. I have all the softwares installed in my machine and database accesses and server to deploy when its completed.
I wonder how can I do the same if I want to do it from home for some friends who wants a web site for small businesses which they do it online. They need a public facing site where users can register and place their orders etc. Can any one explain me what
and all is required to do this development from scratch if I don't have any set up at home and how much it might cost me.
Also want to know what technologies best works for my requirement if not .net. I am currently using c#, vb.net and asp.net with sql server as back end for all my developments in office.
Basically all you need are some development tools such as Visual Studio of which the Web Developer Express edition would be fine and a web server to host the shopping cart on.
There are many hosts out there to chose from one that may intrest you in particular is Azure. What is nioce about hosting through Microsoft Azure is first off it is free up to the point you wish to assign it to your own domain name and go live with the site
to the public. Secondly it is scalable you can start out with minimal resources dedicated to the site and as the site in question grows and more power is needed you can easily add more. Plus it ties nicely into Visual Studio when you have the Azure SDK installed.

Hosting costs vary from host to host just remember you generally get what you pay for.
As far as technologies go ASP.NET is fine. I honestly do not see a reason why any other language such as PHP would be any better or worse for what you are wishing to accomplish.
Building an entire shopping cart system from scratch and integrating things like payment gateways and shipping esimators can get quite extensive. If you would rather not develop a cart from scratch or are under time constrants I would suggest checking out
this open source application: http://www.nopcommerce.com
Thanks a lot for all the information. Its really alot to explore. I will come back with more questions if I am going ahead with these projects.
One more thing, if I want to do it for my friends then how does this hosting works for me. Who will pay for it if I am using the same server for 2 different people? Do I need to pay each time I host each web site ?

There are multiple options for that... in case u go for share hosting, you will have to pay separatetly for every site u host... in that case you may ask u r each friend to pay for their own site
also, the cost of hosting will vary depend on the package... like if if one site requires 10GB of space and another site requires 1GB of space then their cost will be different simillary there are other options like bandwidth, subdomains etc will decide
the cost
hope this helps...
Cheers!

kedarrkulkarni you can buy deluxe hosting package from Godaddy then host as many domain names inside that account as you wish, I know because I am doing this at this moment. Call
