I added my FTP Site address, UID, PWD, and then i put the directory where I wanted to start editing (into the "web url") section.

    my problem is:
My ftp site has an initial directory that has just user folders in it. the ftp site has an alias to get to the WEB directories.

I can't get the Web Matrix App to point to that no matter how I set up that ftp connection.

Any suggestions? is this a bug? is it the way i have my ftp site setup?

    Thanks,
    JS

I'm having the same problem. My FTP root is up a level in the hierarchy from the webroot and there is no way to set an initial directory. This is set by the service provider and is not something I can change. In other words I need:

    FtpRoot/webRoot = webRoot

I haven't been able to find a way to make this work. It seems like a current limitation of the Web Matrix ftp setup. If there is a work-around I would love to know about it.

    Thanks

Ditto - I need to have the ability to specify an initial directory just like the guy in the first post.

On my host, the only directories to which I have access are down the directory tree from the users directory that I get by default in Web Matrix. Since I don't have access to these intermediate directories, I can't get to my directory, which means I can't use the Web Matrix FTP setup at all, at least as far as I can tell. Bummer.

I'm experiencing this issue as well. The Web Matrix FTP setup limits you to only the root directory of an FTP site. I've changed the ftp string to point to various directories but it only loads the default site.

Did you set the Web Root Directory when creating a new FTP connection. This is a new feature in version 0.6 - the latest version.

Yes, I tried the "Web Root Directory" setting in v0.6.812 and I am still having the same trouble everyone else is having. What the Web Matrix's "FTP Connection" dialog box needs is an "FTP Alias" setting, right after the "FTP Server" setting. Many ftp server environments are set up this way, where the underlying ftp path from the ftp root to the website files is DIFFERENT than the underlying web file directory path from the web server root. Having an "FTP Alias" setting in Web Matrix will most likely solve the problem everyone's describing in this discussion thread.

I don't know if I'm facing exactly the same problem as you all...

The fact is that I successfully created a FTP Connection in the Web Matrix Workplace, and when I try to open it I receive the following message:
    Couldn't Open Folder
Could not open data connection to server.

Does anybody know the reason for this???

    Thanks

    If your using IE,

your FTP URL needs to be ...

    ftp://YourName:PassWord@YourName.europe.webmatrixhosting.net/YourName/

Where YourName is your username and PassWord is your login password

It took me guit a while to figure this one out.

Thanks for the reply. However, the problem specified above by everyone is not solved by your solution. It's a good idea, to try to embed the username and password into the ftp URL string. However I tried it in the webmatrix ftp connection dialog box and it doesn't work. Your solution does work if you are simply trying to connect to the ftp site via your web browser. My problem is within the "WebMatrix" application - the available settings on the "New FTP Connection" dialog box to be precise. We need to be given the option to set an "FTP Alias". That will let us directly connect to lower directory down the directory tree of an FTP site.

I connect to my Web site no problem using FTP from within the "Webmatrix" application.
I entered my lower level directory name in the Directory: field and full HTTP web url in the WEB URL: field and it works!
