minutes ago, five of my answers were marked as unanswered ... FWIW, i'm displeased because i put substantial effort into providing quality answers ...
when a post is deleted, we usually get an e-mail telling us why that post was deleted ...
as of this morning, 1091 of my replies were marked as "the answer" with 95 unmarked ...
very recently, timewise, there are suddenly 100 unmarked ...
please tell me which five answers were just unmarked ... i've no idea whether they were unmarked by the O.P. or by someone else ...
likewise, were they recently answered questions, or questions from last week? last month? last year?
imho, it's unfair to have answers unmarked without knowing at least which ones they were ...
i'd really like to look at the corresponding threads to see where perhaps i went wrong.

Gerry - you regularly respond to windows desktop application development questions which are off-topic for an asp.net development site. You are well aware that they are off topic as you post directly into your replies that the threads are off topic as part
of your reply. The forums are regularly checked each night for off topic postings and when the off topic threads are removed, so are the off topic replies.

All members here can use the "Alert Moderators" link to draw quick attention to posts that are offensive, off-topic, duplicate, spam, or otherwise against the site's Terms of Use. We regularly get reports from many members drawing our attention to a variety
of threads with issues and the moderation team members are able to quickly check out the reported threads. You're replies to help them find their way to the msdn forums are appreciated. If you should see more off-topic threads please consider using the alert
link.

ON BEING HELPFUL
Mike ... i've noticed that many members try to be helpful ... if someone asks a question and some member is kind enough to provide a helpful answer, how is that such a bad thing?
Additionally, forums.asp.net has from my experience good SEO in Google ... so, FWIW, an answer to a WPF question can help developers discover
forums.asp.net, a good thing imho.
ON BEING CONSISTENT
why wait until messages have been answered for sometime before deleting them?
why delete answers that might be useful to many of forums.asp.net 170 000+ members?
mbanavige
you post directly into your replies that the threads are off topic as part of your reply
guilty (a) of being helpful, and (b) enlightening new members of the constraints.

so, then, Mike, it's just a coincidence that five of my older answers were deleted around the same time as this thread was being debated: http://forums.asp.net/post/5086947.aspx
MY CONCLUSIONS

an answer to a WPF question can help developers discover forums.asp.net, a good thing imho.
It isn't a "good thing" if all it does is encourage other questions on WPF. Or Silverlight. Or Windows Forms. They will get in the way of ASP.NET questions which is the purpose of this forum.

consistency is a good thing
Agreed. One should always strive for consistency. Sometimes you report off-topic posts. Sometimes you answer them. It would be better if you consistently reported them.
Let me elaborate ... by WPF question, i did not mean a question that was applicable ONLY to
WPF, for example #1:
How can we build a simple StackPanel with a textblock and a button in
XAML?
what i did mean is a question like this, example #2:
for my WPF application, i am designing a class library and i do not understand when i should use an interface instead of an abstract class.
given that the above question would get answered if it were written thus:
i am designing a class library and i do not understand when i should use an interface instead of an abstract class.
and given that many of the forums 170 000+ members would benefit from the answer, then imho, answering example #2 would be reasonable; i'm absolutely certain that Bill Gates would approve answering example #2.

Mike, this is true ... it's also true that when i do, i frequently feel like i'm being a
nasty person.

guilty ... of course, often the ones that i answer are similar to example #2, above.
FWIW, i'm just make an effort to be helpful to my peers here at forums.asp.net; i put myself in their shoes ... many are desperate for an answer ... perhaps they posted a few days ago ... whereas an immediate rejection is useful, such a delayed rejection
is a slap in the face to the member ... such rejections should be timely.
Mikesdotnetting

probably.
imho, it would be best if members were clearly indocrinated, ¿perhaps with a true/false quiz?, before they were allowed to make their first post.
Mike, i really do not like being the bad guy.

That would rather only hinder people in their search for help. Getting people to read the
guidelines or creating more awareness about them would be a good start.

being the bad guy.
How's being a bad guy when one simply reports something going bad? The best thing's to simply report it as soon as possible so that action can be taken. We appreciate the social control from our members who regularly report such things. I personally simply
wish more people would report. After all it's about keeping a clean, nice forum where members are happy visitors and become a better community.

mbanavige - I respect your reply.. But why cant' we have more moderator's here, which help you guys to organise or make things easier.
This happened to me long back also..
That time the same reason only, later I started asking the member to post such threads to msdn forums only.
