My windows xp 64-bit edition disk melted down, so I upgraded to windows 7 a few days ago.
Now I'm trying to install my visual studio 2005 professional on 64-bit windows 7 so I can continue developing my software. However, at or near the end of installation disk #2, a warning dialog of some kind appears, which says:
-----
This program has known compatibility issues.
Check online to see if solutions are available from the microsoft website. If solutions are found, windows will automatically display a website that lists steps you can take.
Program: visual studio 2005
Publisher: Microsoft
Location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe
The buttons along the bottom are: "check for solutions online" : "run program" : "cancel"
-----
When I click "check for solutions online", it displays another dialog window with the following contents (when I click "hide" to unhide the following message):
Problem Signature:
Problem Event Name: ApphelpSoftBlock
Problem Signature 01: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-1111111111111}
Problem Signature 02: {5f66dbae-cad3-468a-83d0-77ace8abc1f6}
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Question #1: What is the so-called "compatibility problem"?
Question #2: How do I get a successful install?
Question #3: If I cannot install this, can I develop my 64-bit application with one of the express editions? Note that my program has 32-bit and 64-bit format assembly-language files (not inline assembly), so I can compile 32-bit and 64-bit versions of
my applications. The 64-bit assembly-language file contains 256-bit wide SIMD/AVX/FMA4 instructions.
I can't really remember if there is a way to do 64bit development with the Express Editions or not. I know that the full versions have the 64bit compilers as an option, but there might be a way with the Express Editions and the Windows SDK (a seperate
download).
The Internet Archive Wayback Machine can be used to find an older copy of the website right now. Microsoft seems to have replaced it with their new Visual Studio 2012 branding.

For Answers to #1 and #2:
Please read this web site for more information on Visual Studio 2005 issues on Windows Vista/7.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/aa948853.aspx
Here are the update locations the posting talks about:
Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5553
Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Vista Update (needed even for Windows 7): http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7524
Make sure you run these updates by right clicking on them and choosing to "Run As Administrator"
Finally, IE 8+ (default in Windows 7) doesn't play nice with Visual Studio 2005. Just incase you aren't familar with its issues, read: http://blogs.iis.net/webdevelopertips/archive/2009/03/31/tip-51-did-you-know-how-to-use-vs2005-to-debug-with-ie8.aspx

Hi au_mikey,
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/aa948853.aspx
The link you provided above does not address the VS2005/Windows7 issues.
Instead it goes to a VS 2012 marketing page.
This does not help. Can you provide a cached version of what was there?
Thanks
Jamie
