I noticed that I got the following: Inbox (2). That means that I got 2 unread messages. When I take a look at my public profile, which also includes the section "Unread private messages" then I get to see only the message: You have no unread private messages.

I had something similar, but i went through and cleaned out my inbox a bit removing some of the very old messages. After removing some of those olders messages the anomolous unread count corrected itself.

All feedback, suggestions, and bugs reported in this thread to date have been logged. We've triaged the feedback and have fixed most bugs that would prevent us from moving permanently to the new design. We anticipate at least one more round of updates

I had this at work. Windows XP pro with Chrome 8. On my Windows 7 with Chrome 8 I'm not seeing this issue.
Update: after posting this I also got to see it on my other laptop.
