Hi All;

  I've got the identical problem to the one I've been reading about in other posts but have not been able to find a fix for it yet and I refuse to believe that it's purely to do with IE8's new standard compliance.

Basically, I have a horizontal menu control.  The top menu items display fine but when I hover over any, all I get is a plain white box.  The white box is clearly above the parent menu item and all else on the screen as it obscures them so it's definitely not a z-order issue (but I did try changing my z-order to 999 to no avail).

The very same menu displays in all other browsers I've tried it with, namely: Opera, Firefox, Netscape, Safari and Chrome.

Does anyone have any idea for a solution to this problem other than forcing it to render in compatibility mode (which I don't really consider a solution or workaround)?

This can generally be cured with a z-index fix, but check out http://weblogs.asp.net/bleroy/archive/2009/03/23/asp-menu-fix-for-ie8-problem-available.aspx to see if that helps.

Thanks Dave.  Installing that hotfix works a treat.  Obviously, I'll need to direct all viewers of my page to install this patch as well or use compatibility mode.  Would you happen to know:

 1. If this (hotfix) is likely to become part of the automatic updates? and

2. If not, then is it likely/possible to be able (licensed) to redistribute this hotfix?

I don't know if it's part of updates or redistributable. Generally not to the latter, since Microsoft want to ensure that all patches come from a known source, to stop potential fake patches. YOu could try posting to the blogs that mentioned it.
