What type of ASP.NET hosting you are looking for - Shared, VPS, Dedicated, Reseller? Also what is your visitors' location - USA, Europe, Asia? There are many important factors when you choose a hosting provider and it depends on your needs.

I use OrcsWeb.  Quite frankly, they're the best.  Quite understandably, they're nowhere near the cheapest.

From what I've seen, especially with shared hosting, this is mostly trial-and-error. You are not going to find a clear-cut 'best' host.

Please keep us updated on whether you like arvixe.  Like you say it's a lot of trial and error, but user testimonials help to alert people of the good (and bad) ones.

Arvixe looks good.  The only thing I'd question is whether they overload their servers alot since they have a lot of unlimited features.

Assuming you're taking about OrcsWeb...

Well, you're using them right now.  They host the www.asp.net site, as well as quite a few others.  They are extremely proactive with  notifying users of potential issues, and explaining unexpected outages.  Redundant data centers, redundant backbone connections, 24x7 support, never had a support email go more then ten minutes without an answer, they go far beyond their responsibilities in tracking issues, even to the point of debugging your site code, never oversold on bandwidth or capacity, incredible uptime...

I could go on forever on what makes them the best, but 95% of the posters in this forum will never use them due to the costs.  They don't even pretend to compete with the GoDaddy/WebHost4Life/Discount ASP types of hosters. If you want the best and are happy to pay for it, they are the ones to use.  Their monthly fee exceeds some of the cheap hosts' annual fee.  But, if you need to haul cattle cross country, you don't buy a Ford Focus.

I do understand your point, but I found another way: I rent virtual dedicated servers now. Some of my clients continue to use shared hosting accounts, but I recommend them to move to VDS too. With VDS you are a God, ok "a god" :)
