My 2005 machine was getting pretty show. It had XP Pro and SP2.

I bought a new machine and installed the same XP Pro but with SP3.

Then I re-installed the Visual Studio Enterprise Architect 2003 on the new machine.

When I try to call up VS, a small window appears. It is headed with the name of a folder which was created somewhere in the installation process for VS, and asks for a user name and password which I don't have. I compared the security tabs for all the folders that I thought could be relevant on both machines but they all seem to be identical.

Has anyone got any idea how to get over the problem, please ?

LATER: I looked again at the old machine and the new machine. The old one has

    MS .NET 1.1 and

    MS .NET 1.1 Hotfix KB92836

The new machine has both the above plus

    MS .NET 2.0 SP2

    MS .NET 3.0 SP2

    MS .NET 3.5 SP1

I noticed that the last of these (at least) was added when I installed a recent of Nero.

I am wondering whether VS 2003 is confused by all these version of .NET

This has been solved - I forgot to mark up the thread. Sorry.

The truth is, I tried to keep things simple by re-installing all my old software on my new machine. I did this on the basis of "If it works, don't mend it".

It was a dreadful mistake because the old stuff, consisting of various patches etc, could not really be re-installed in the form I was hoping for. What's more, the attempt thoroughly upset the operating system. I had to re-install it three times before I got things right.

In the end I bought all new software (I kept the XP Pro, but nothing else). New VS 2008, New Ipswitch FTP, New Office ... New everything.

    Then it worked  fine.
