I am trying to set up Vista for the first time to write and run ASP.NET applications. I have done this a few time before with Win98 (remember PWS) 2000, XP; each time I recall struggling through one error message after the other, jerking around with permissions and such until it finally ran. Each time I was amazed that nobody has written step by step instructions for setting up IIS to run your first ASP.NET application. This should be the first thing on the ASP.NET Get Started page. Has anyone seen something like this for Vista?

Which version of Vista do you have (it should be fairly straight-forward/not like the old days)?

     I'm running Vista Home Premium

I looked at the schnieids blog but I couldn't see "Windows Authentication"  in my list of Security features. Also the instructions stop at registering WCF. I don't even know what WCF is, but this is clearly not the basic/complete setup instruction I need.

I can't be the first person who has tried to get an ASP.NET application running on a local machine.

I'm running on Vista Home Premium with no problems at all. Just install IIS, .NET Framework 3.5 and go. Not sure it really warrants an entire article or how-to.

Then you want www.iis.net.  Same login as here.

Not sure it really warrants an entire article or how-to.

I installed IIS but when I try to run it I get "Server Error in '/' Application" and authentication mode="Windows"

A detailed step by step set of instructions would have shown me how to avoid this typically cryptic error message, that is why I need it and why I asked for it.

I would say in general that to tell someone that they don't need what they clearly say they need is not helpful, though I expect this from IT folks, right after "are you sure it is plugged in?" and "did you try a reboot?"

I looked all over IIS.NET but could not find simple instructions.

I don't think Windows Authentication Mode is available in Home Premium but this should not stop me from just running a simple web page, right?

I do want to set up a simple local intranet. Can I do this with Home Premium?

I have done this kind of thing with every version of Windows since Win 98 Personal Web Server and I have had to *** around with error messages each time. I can't be the only one who could use this.

Okay, I got it. In Vista I need to "Add Application" where I was used to using "Add Virtual Directory" before in XP
