marked as answer today by ??????????

(I've since got in and marked other answers as answer that also deserved marks imo.)

Please ~~ set some rules for marking posts as answer that at least wait for rigor mortis to have commenced.

    Thank you.

Hi Gerry, I've sent a PM to the person who marked the answer.

The rule of thumb for Microsoft's CSS team is to look at unanswered threads after they are 5 days old.  I understand why you are annoyed, and agree that is not acceptable.  Active, recent threads should be left for the OP to mark answers.

Terri, it just happened again on this thread:

    http://forums.asp.net/t/1440751.aspx o.p. by me =. 18 hours, 2 minutes ago

    3 hours, 49 minutes ago -- paul.vencill

I've left paul.vencill's answer marked ~~ however, I've changed the status from Resolved to Not Resolved to allow for the possibility of other opinions.

If I were cynical (what, me cynical?), I'd suspect that there's a bounty being paid for every post that gets marked as an answer.  Perhaps Uncle Bill is giving away some of his billions.  If that's true, I wish enough would come my way to pay my mortgage arrears.

    B-(

Idea! ~~ many people add "please mark as answer to their posts"; maybe I should add "please to not mark as answer"???

Sorry, Terri ~~ as you can imagine, this is so frustrating.  As you've already stated:

    Hi Terri, thank you.

He's probably too busy marking answers to read his PM's.      B-(

I humbly suggest that you e-mail him directly.

P.S.:  just curious.  When the O.P. marks an answer, the O.P. gets one recognition point.

If a non-O.P. marks that answer instead, does she/he get the recognition point instead of the O.P.?

IMHO, only OP should get points when marking someone's answer as an answer.

BTW, on MSDN forums you can now see who marked an answer and who proposed the answer to be marked as a solution

I almost fully agree with Naom ... my variation ... do not touch threads until 30 days after last reply; thereafter, once marked by a non-O.P., the O.P. should receive an e-mail and have seven days to protest.  After that, the non-O.P. gets to keep the point.

If elected, I promise to put an end to premature marking!     B-(

if it is, then you need imo to REMOVE her/his right to mark answers.
Obviously, if this is the same person, she/he is not bothering to read YOUR PM.
Also, if she/he is the same person, I'd reset all of her/his recognition points to zero
as punishment for not following your guidelines.

Please, Terri ~~ makes this stop.

    Hi Gerry,

I contacted the person who marked the last 2 threads by pm (not the same person as the other threads you mentioned earlier) to keep in mind the 2 days limit we usually let for the OP to mark the answers.

On the other hand I believe the person meant no harm and noticed a reply which provided a valid answer, marked it as such to the benefit of the community and readers of that answer.

    Grz, Kris.

    Hi Kris,

thank you for the update ... I'm glad it's at least a different person this time.  I was beginning to become very paranoid about this.

I take marking answers very seriously so it's frustrating when this happens.  It's even more frustrating when it happens after having been dormant for quite a while.

Actually, BTW, I believe Terri's guideline is more like "one weeK" than "two days' ~~ "two days" is far too short, especially with weekends.

Example:  Monday, August 1st, is a holiday in most of Canada.  If someone posted a message on Friday (yesterday), she/he might not even return to forums.asp.net until Tuesday.  That's about four days gone in a flash.

    Regards,
    Gerry (Lowry)

The people who have been marking answers in the ASP.NET MVC forum are ASP.NET team members, not Microsoft support engineers.  It's not "Terri's guideline", it is the "Microsoft support team's guideline" which I have been repeating to you.  Their guideline is to wait 5-7 days after the original thread starting post has been made.  The ASP.NET team members are not aware of that guideline, and as issues are reported we've been contacting those team members individually.  I've now sent an email to the Microsoft PM for this site, asking if he could disseminate the Microsoft support team policy to the ASP.NET team members.
