Is there a way that the page text can be updated without having to go into the code ? 

 please explain what do you means by page text?????

On the page there is already default text in place on the left hand side is there any way that this can be altered through the DB or will I have to keep going into the code to change the text ?

 you can store page contents into database even complet html using ntext field in database...

and give an interface at admin site to change these contents..you can use freetextbox to edit contents

Yes. You have to open every page and look for <div id="columnleft">. Behind this tag, you will have to chage the text between <p> and </p>
