I' m a newbie to web application development. I have read some tutorials on web regarding the definition and usage of CMS. understood the basic things.

what I want to know is can we integrate CMS into an existing website. For eg. if we have our company website(static) and want to manage the content, can we do it by integrating a CMS like joomla or we have to rebuild it using joomla?

also let me know how to integrate the same(CMS) for an e-commerce site developed in ASP.NET and C#.

Sure you can add a CMS into a static site, you need to ask yourself what you need the CMS to do for you.

As for adding joomla not sure as this is a php CMS.

It would be very easy just to build a simple admin backend with say edit and any other function you need.

You can integrate a CMS into an existing site. If your site is based on ASP.Net, Joomla is not really an option because it requires the use of PHP. Most likely, you are looking for something that will "plug in" to your existing site (judging by your description). I have written a CMS that works with existing sites (http://clovercontent.com). It works with ASP.Net (using web services) and integrates nicely into existing designs. There are some other systems out there that work sort of like a browser based FTP client as well.
