I need to create and develop an app with MS sharepoint for an office team to share documents. I have VS2005 and SQL2005/2000. I am familiar with ASP.NET/VB/C# but totally new to sharepoint. Please help me get started and going. Thanks.

You need to develop WebParts in VS 2005, package them and install them in SharePoint.

You can then plug the WebParts in SharePoint where ever needed.

The application your are doing can be done using WSS 3.0 for this you need to install even .NET Framework 3.0

WSS 3.0 is a Free ware and you can download from the Microsoft site.

Is Microsoft.SharePoint.dll included in the download?

yes all the dll files are provided with the exe file provided by Microsoft.

But be carefull while installiing all this stuff on your system. There should be a specific order so that you should face any trouble in the future.

    1. Install Windows 2003 OS (which  supports for WSS )

    2. install IIS

    3. Install VS 2005.

    4. Install SQL Server 2005 sp2 with reporting services in mixed mode authentication.

    5. Install framework 3.0

6.Then Install WSS 3.0 in your system

You can't Run Share Point on a client System so you need Server systems i.e you need to install it on Windows 2003 server SP1 is the prerequisite for  Share Point Server 2007

No, WSS 3.0 will not run on XP.  You need Server 2003 or 2008
