It has occurred to me today that I get a lot of technical information from other developers but I don't get much career advice. One of the benefits of professional networking is that you should get a lot of information on career opportunities. I'm very entrepreneurial and do a lot of freelance work so I'm not financially dependent upon my full-time job. Therefore I would like to know what sort of development work other programmers do to make extra income.
I've found plenty of work customizing shopping carts based on ASP.NET. There seems to be a high demand for adjusting the shipping options. However this is not high paying work because merchants are frequently struggling. I suspect there is more money to be had in meeting the technology needs of government contractors. The trick would be in knowing what sort of ineffiencies there are in the types of projects that government agencies tackle. For example, in ecommerce it requires a lot of actual project experience to realize that shipping options will usually be a problem area for a business.
