Our Books page presents a list of 11 starter books. Personally I recommend
ASP.NET 2.0 for Dummies as an ideal book for anyone who is completely new to ASP.NET.

a good basic starter book is Teach Yourself ASP.NET 2.0 in 24 Hours by Scott Mitchell.
although a fair chunk of "starter" content can be found on the internet, mainly on this website.

I'll third the Dummies book. In fact, it's still in use by me when I need to do something I haven't done in a while or never do.
