Just an observation: why does a site from Microsoft that supports a MS technology contain ads?

    It's ugly, and I don't see ads on msdn.microsoft.com, java.sun.com, php.net, rubyonrails.org, adobe.com/devnet/flex/ or adobe.com/devnet/coldfusion/

Doesn't Microsoft just pay for this site and the traffic?

Good question - not sure, maybe its to show links to content from companies whom Microsoft work with. The companies that do advertise seem to be carefully chosen and have good recommendations.

The links are relevant, which is good I guess (many component vendors). I see that the IIS website also contains ads. Still seems strange to me. Like General Motors would put ads on the website for their new car...
