    ms-help://MS.VSExpressCC.v80/MS.NETFramework.v20.en/dv_vwdcon/html/bb4e5b44-e2b0-48ab-bbe9-609fb33900b6.htm

If you follow the walk-through in the VWD help file using the URL above then in the section called: To automatically generate a resource file then the documentation does NOT match the VWD behaviour.

    1) If you select the esigner surface or a control on the page and then click on the Tools menu, then the "Generate Local Resource" option is missing from the dropdown list.

    2) If you select another area, f. ex. the Solution Explorer and then click the Tools menu then "Generate Local REsource" is present but GRAYED OUT

So all in all it does not work

Any help would be greatly appreciated as generating the resource file by hand is far too cumbersome when you have many controls on a page

    Kind regards
    Torben

Generate Local Resouce is not supported in VWD. It is supported in Visual Studio Standard and above.
    Thanks

I am having the same problem and the last answer given in this thread is not totally correct.

I am using both Visual Studio 2005 Professional and Visual Studio 2008 Professional and at least in VS.2008 it appears greyed out. I know that some weeks ago I used the "Generate Local Resource" and was fascinated by it as it saves a lot of work. Then some days ago we migrated our IT environment and suddenly the option is no longer usable.

So there must be a bug there somewhere. I understand it does not work in Express editions but that it suddently stops working in a Professional edition is not acceptable.

GLR is designer based command (as in VS 2005). It should become active after first switch to design or split view and should stay active as long as design view is in sync vith source.

    Thanks

Is it possible to use the generate local resource as an external tool, if not how can it be done?

it seems this is embedded inside MS VS

    regards

Well we were able to automate it , see http://forums.asp.net/t/1280608.aspx
